Pakistan beats Taipei, boosts Azkals hopes
MANILA, Philippines – Pakistan defeated Chinese Taipei, 1-0, in their 2013 Peace Cup match Sunday at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod to boost the Philippine Azkals’ hopes of retaining their title.
Zesh Rehman scored the lone goal of the match in the seventh minute, and Pakistan survived several last ditch efforts from Chinese Taipei late in the second half.
Thanks to Pakistan’s victory, the Philippine Azkals still have a chance of retaining the Peace Cup crown if they beat Pakistan by two goals in their match on Tuesday.
“Massive result in our favor. Now I will say the last game to win is all in our hands,” Azkals first choice goal-keeper Neil Etheridge tweeted after the game.
Chinese-Taipei had beaten the Azkals in their opening game, 2-1, last Friday.
The Azkals made history last year when they won the Peace Cup, their first crown in 99 years.
