Rising Rain or Shine to face SMB Wednesday
It will be a 'David versus Goliath' scenario on Wednesday’s Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) main feature when former “whipping boys” Rain or Shine face powerhouse team San Miguel Beer at the Araneta Coliseum.
An improved Rain or Shine, which has launched a franchise-best 2-0 season start, will undergo its real test against a super-sized San Miguel Beermen (SMB) starting 7:30 pm.
"I wish, we, being David, could be able to find a way to win against a Goliath team like San Miguel," joked Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia, in a report posted on www.PBA.ph.
Kidding aside, the Rain or Shine coach conceded that the Elasto Painters don't have any advantage against SMB.
"They (Beermen) are big, experienced and can match up with our speed," noted Garcia. He, however, promised his troops will give the Beermen some competition.
Garcia credited the team’s chemistry as the catalyst in their recent successes.
"Right now we're more of a family than a team," he said, referring to his team's willingness to share the ball and get everybody involved.
Gabe Norwood, the No.1 overall draft pick, has a simple explanation as to why the team that could only manage a 7-29 record last season suddenly look like a playoff contender.
"We're doing the right things," Norwood said. "We're a young team, we're excited and we're having fun."
For his part, San Miguel mentor Siot Tanquingcen disagreed that the Elasto Painters are completely overmatched.
"We have the height advantage but we have no match for their quickness," he said.
SMB is seeking a second straight win after beating Purefoods.
The Purefoods TJ Giants, meanwhile, hope to bounce back from a shocking 111-98 loss to the Beermen. The Giants will face the Coca-Cola Tigers at 5 pm.
Coca-Cola coach Binky Favis thinks their game against Purefoods provides the Tigers an opportunity to win.
"Purefoods is a very strong team, although James Yap isn't in top form yet. After losing bad the last time, I'm very sure they will come back strong," Favis said.
