Rivero kicks off RP’s world taekwondo bid

MANILA – Three Filipino taekwondo jins are set to see action on the first day of the World Taekwondo Championships Wednesday in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Olympian Toni Rivero will compete in the Women under 67 kg – welter division against Swede Lie Kylborn.

Marlon Avenido, meantime, will face Nikolaos Tzellos of Greece in the Men under 80 kg – welter division.

In the Men over 87 kg – heavy division, Alexander Briones will take on Vugar Majidov of Azerbaijan.

Other Filipinos entered in the event are Olympian Tshomlee Go (bantam), Japoy Lizardo (fin), Jeffrey Figueroa (feather), Jyra Lizardo (fly), Kathleen Alora (bantam), Karla Alava (feather), Maria Roxas (light) and Kristie Alora (middle).

An estimated 1,000 athletes from 140 countries are set to compete at the World Taekwondo Championships in 16 weight classes.

Matches will be held from Oct. 14 to 18 at the Ballerup Super Arena.

The World Taekwondo Championships is held every other year. The previous one took place in 2007 in Beijing, China.
