Casio explodes as Alaska finally wins
MANILA, Philippines -- Jvee Casio finally exploded to carry the Alaska Aces to their first win at the expense of the Barako Bull Energy Cola, 102-86, in the PBA Philippine Cup action Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Casio, whom Alaska acquired in a blockbuster trade in exchange for its long-time playmaker LA Tenorio prior to the season, sizzled with 24 points to lead all scorers.
The former Smart Gilas point guard poured in 12 in a searing third quarter rally that transformed a 52-62 deficit eight minutes in the third to a huge 81-65 Alaska lead before the final frame.
The Energy Cola recovered from that 29-3 run by the Aces and came within one, 85-84, with their own 19-4 blast.
Alaska, however, steadied down the stetch and limited Barako Bull to just one solitary point in the final 5:46 of the game.
Cyrus Baguio and Mac Baracael also came up big with 22 and 21 points, respectively for the Aces' first win against two defeats.
Enrico Villanueva's monster game of 22 points and 17 rebounds went down the drain as the Energy Cola fell to their second straight loss after debuting with a win over the Air21 Express.
In the nightcap, San Mig Coffee withstood top rookie big man June Mar Fajardo's career game to escape with a 90-84 win.
The Mixers drew 18 and 17 markers, respectively, from James Yap and PJ Simon to grab a share of the lead with defending champion Talk n Text Tropang Texters.
Fajardo came away with his best game finishing with 16 points and 13 boards while anchoring a fiery Petron rally in the fourth that saw the Blaze Boosters cut a double-digit deficit to just three.
Simon, Rafi Reavis and Yap sealed the win with clutch hits to deal Petron its second loss in three outings.
