Pinoy jins post victories in world taekwondo tilt

MANILA -- Three Pinoy jins won their opening matches on Day 2 of the World Taekwondo Championships Thursday in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Karla Alava won over Austrian featherweight Lisa Weinzierl via disqualification. She will be advancing to the Round of 32 to Taipei's Tseng Pei.

Jyra Lizardo defeated Alejandra Mena of Chile, 9-3, to set up a flyweight battle with Yasmina Aziez of France next in the Round of 32.

Nicole Mapilisan also won his first match versus Nasikhidin Vorisov of Tajikistan via disqualification in the men's flyweight division. He, however, was outmatched by Spain's Joel Gonzalez Bonilla, 13-1, in the Round of 32.

Earlier, three Filipino jins suffered losses during Wednesday’s opening day of the taekwondo championships.

Olympian Toni Rivero lost to Swede Lie Kylborn in the women’s welterweight division while men’s welter Marlon Avenido suffered a setback against Nikolaos Tzellos of Greece.

Alexander Briones also suffered a loss to Vugar Majidov in the heavyweight division.
