Palace lauds Donaire's win over Nishioka
MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang on Sunday congratulated world super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire for his ninth-round technical knockout victory over Japanese foe Toshiaki Nishioka.
“Again, congratulations to Nonito 'The Filipino Flash' Donaire for winning over Nishioka of Japan,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in an interview over radio DZRB.
“Na-retain po niya, congratulations on retaining your IBF (and WBO) super bantamweight titles by technical knockout. Kakatapos lang po noon kanina sa Carson City, California,” she added.
“So again, congratulations to Nonito Donaire.”
Donaire, ranked in the top five of most pound-for-pound lists, was fighting one of the top fighters in the super bantamweight division in Nishioka, who has not lost a boxing match in eight years.
After a slow start, Donaire was able to get his offense going in the second round even though Nishioka spent most of the early part of the fight on the defensive.
Donaire was able to penetrate Nishioka’s defense, however, and in the sixth round he sent the Japanese to the canvas with a left to the body followed by a left uppercut.
In the ninth round, Nishioka was able to get Donaire against the ropes and started unloading punches, but “The Filipino Flash” knocked Nishioka down once more with a perfectly placed counter-right straight.
Nishioka’s corner stopped the fight immediately after even though their fighter was able to beat the 10-count.
It was Donaire’s 29th straight victory, giving him a record of 30 wins and one loss.
"Mukhang naso-solidify talaga 'yung pwesto ng ating mga Filipino boxers doon sa international stage when it comes to boxing," Valte said of Donaire's victory.
"So hindi na lang po (si) Manny Pacquiao ...meron na rin po tayong Donaire at 'yung mga iba pa ho nating Filipino (boxing) rising stars na nagdadala po ng karangalan sa ating bansa," she said.
