MANILA, Philippines - The University of the East leads a cast of varsity teams competing in the national students weightlifting championships, which will select the Philippine team to the 27th Summer Universiade set July 6-17, 2013 in Kazan, Russia.

Lawyer Baldomero Estenzo, chairman of the organizing committee, said UE head coach Edmundo Jose Cardano is sending a five-man team composed of Mohaimen Sobair, Charles Justin Cardano, Richard Debuque, Nestor Redulla, and Ranvijay Dalip Brar to the championships slated at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The NSW championship is the inaugural competition of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc., (CESSAFI), an affiliate of the Federation of School Sports Associations of the Philippines (FESSAP), country member of the International Federation of Schools and Universities (FISU), which organizes the biennial Universiade or University Games, the Olympics of universities worldwide.

The Philippines, which participated for the first time in 2011 the last time the Universiade was held in Shenzhen, China, hopes to compete with a bigger, stronger contingent in the 2013 biennial conclave which draws participation from universities and colleges from 166 member countries worldwide.

Felix Tiukinhoy, organizing committee executive director and CESSAFI commissioner, said the weightlifting championships will be a regular competition, which will also be the national tryout that will select national athletes for the Universiade.

Danny Catingub is the tournament director, with Jess Himotas of the University of San Jose Recoletos as member and Graham Lim of FESSAP as adviser.

“We have so many athletes in the CESSAFI that can be developed to become skilled weightlifters,” said Estenzo, adding that he is looking for a partnership with the Cebu City Sports Commission under Edward Hayco and City Mayor Michael Rama.

“Our member schools such as University of San Carlos, University of Visayas, San Jose Recoletos, University of Cebu and others can be a major source. We are also sending invitations to schools from the northern part of the country which have a solid program for weightlifting that can develop talents for local and international competitions,” Estenzo said.

Catingub, who is also athletic supervisor at the University of Cebu, said CESSAFI has also invited schools in the Mindanao area.

Meanwhile, the NSWC organizing committee has designated the Cebu Coliseum as the official training venue of the weightlifters.
