Azkals feel powerful tremor in Bacolod
MANILA – Members of the Philippine Azkals were not spared from the powerful tremor that caused massive damage in parts of Cebu and Bohol on Tuesday.
The Azkals are in Bacolod City, more than a hundred kilometers away from Cebu City, for the Peace Cup.
Azkals players Jerry Lucena and Paul Mulders said they woke with their beds shaking, and at first they thought their teammates were pulling a prank on them.
Azkals team captain Chieffy Caligdong said he stormed out of his room after he felt the ceiling and walls shaking.
“Sobrang lakas, ‘yung ceiling at walls mararamdaman mo talaga na moving. Nagtakbuhan talaga kami, sobrang maramdaman mo talaga ‘yung lakas eh, ‘yung bed gumagalaw talaga,” he said.
Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella said no casualties and damage were reported in the city.
The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude 7.2, about 2 kilometers southeast of Carmen town, Bohol at 8:12 a.m.
Aftershocks are expected from the quake.
The Azkals will play a crucial game against Pakistan Tuesday night. Several players were hit by food poisoning on Monday, but coach Michael Weiss said the team is ready to play.
The Philippine football team has a chance of retaining their Peace Cup crown if they beat Pakistan by two goals. -- Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
