Go enters Round of 16 in world taekwondo

MANILA -- Olympian Tshomlee Go advanced into the Round of 16 in the 2009 World Taekwondo Championship after defeating his Belarusian opponent Friday at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Go outpointed Anatol Kachuk, 5-2, in the Men’s bantamweight to forge a match up with Frariz Aliyev of Azerbaijan in Round of 16.

Filipino jin Kathleen Alora also advanced to the Round of 16 by beating Diahara Toure of Mali, 7-2, in the Women’s bantamweight division.

Alora’s next opponent will be Sarita Phongshri of Thailand.

Karla Alava and Jyra Lizardo, meanwhile, were eliminated in the competition after losing their Round of 32 matches late Thursday.

Other Filipino competitors who got the boot in the biennial event were Olympian Toni Rivero, Marlon Avenido, Nicole Mapilisan and Alexander Briones.

Filipino jins still set to see action are Japoy Lizardo (finweight) and Jeffrey Figueroa (featherweight), Maria Roxas (lightweight) and Kristie Alora (middleweight).

More than 1,000 athletes from 140 countries have joined the 2009 World Taekwondo Championship which runs until October 18.
