Pacquiao decks burly sparring mate
MANILA – Looks like boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao is getting stronger by the day as he knocked down his junior middleweight sparring partner Shawn Porter.
He did this not once but twice on Thursday according to a report by Philstar.com.
“It only means that he’s ready for the fight and that he’s doing very well,” coach Freddie Roach told The Philippine Star’s Abac Cordero.
Roach said Pacquiao sparred four rounds with Porter, catching the 2007 National Golden Gloves champion, with two powerful lefts in the third round of their session.
But the knockdowns don’t mean much for Roach.
“Yes, Shawn went down twice but he came back very well and caught Manny with a good hook. He came back very well,” said the Hall-of-Fame trainer.
Roach also said Pacquiao sparred four rounds with former World Boxing Council champion Jose Luis Castillo.
“I like his style because he likes to come in and tends to lean forward,” he said of the Mexican champion.
Castillo, who fought the likes of Diego Corrales, Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather Jr., is helping Pacquiao prepare for his “Fire Power” showdown with Miguel Cotto.
The Mexican was reportedly chosen as one of Pacquiao’s sparring partners because of the similarity of his fighting style with Cotto’s.
