Petron routs San Mig, takes 2-1 lead
MANILA (UPDATED) - Petron Blaze Boosters emphatically beat the San Mig Coffee Mixers, 90-68, in Game 3 of the PBA Governors Cup Finals Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Elijah Millsap led the scoring for the Boosters with 28 points, while Junmar Fajardo put up a highly-efficient performance with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.
The top-seeded Boosters responded convincingly after their loss on Sunday with a performance reminiscent of their Game 1 performance that saw them similarly rout San Mig.
Petron set the tone with their defense, consistently bothering the passing lanes of San Mig, yielding 6 turnovers in the first quarter alone.
Petron, who was missing guard Alex Cabagnot, surprised San Mig when they threw Elijah Millsap to the point guard spot.
It was Millsap's constant drive-and-kick to the perimeter shooters, led by Dennis Miranda, that helped opened up an 8-point lead for the Boosters after the first quarter, 28-20.
Petron then blew the game wide open at the start of the second quarter when their good defense and ball movement led to a 14-2 run that saw them open up a 20-point lead.
Substitutes Miranda and Paolo Hubalde combined for 15 points in the first half to help ease the loss of their starting point guard, Cabagnot.
Meanwhile, the Coffee Mixers shot a poor 33% from the field and had a total of 12 turnovers in the first half, with leading man Marqus Blakely only managing 5 points along with 4 blocks.
Only Blakely, Yap and Pingris were able to score for San Mig for the whole of the second quarter.
Petron also had 15 points off turnovers to add to a miserable half for San Mig.
"In the last game, we were actually firing on all cylinders and obviously, we weren't tonight," said San Mig head coach Tim Cone.
Petron took advantage of an off-night by San Mig and didn't take their foot off the brakes as they opened up their biggest lead, 77-37, led by Fajardo, midway through the third quarter.
At one point, Fajardo even took the ball down the court to provide an assist for an easy bucket to showcase Petron's overall dominance that saw them win with leading scorer Millsap on the bench for almost the whole of the fourth quarter.
“When a team plays this badly, it’s not about the players. It’s about the coaching. It’s all on us. We’ll try to forget about this loss and focus on the next one,” Cone added.
Blakely led the scoring for San Mig with 17 points, while Yap put up 10 to become the only other player from San Mig in double-digits.
Game 4 is on Friday at the MOA Arena.
