CEU, DLS-Zobel, RTU keep WNCAA titles

MANILA, Philippines - Centro Escolar University, host De La Salle Zobel and Rizal Technological University retained their respective crowns while San Beda College Alabang and Miriam College took two titles each at the close of the 43rd WNCAA’s first semester over the weekend.

CEU, behind Charmaine Natural and MVP Janine Pontejos, beat RTU twice, 79-38 and 78-48, to capture the senior basketball crown.

Natural and Pontejos scored 42 and 27 points, respectively, in CEU’s back-to-back wins at the St. Scholastica Manila gym.

DLSZ also kept the midgets crown with a 55-36 rout of Miriam in their winner-take-all finals match. Jel Alliah Jajurie topscored for the Alabang-based squad with 15 markers. Miriam, however, unseated DLSZ in the juniors divisions via sweep, 55-49 and 57-53.

In volleyball, Miriam repeated as junior volleyball champion as it bested DLSZ again, 25-17, 25-19, 27-25 and 25-21, 25-11, 15-25, 30-28.

San Beda is the new midgets champion after surviving DLSZ, 15-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18, 24-26, 25-15.

CEU swept Miriam for its second seniors title, 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-17, 25=17, 25-18, in the tournament backed by Goody, Mikasa, Molten, Sun Cellular, MJC Photography, network partner AKTV and radio partner Monster Radio RX 93.1.

Named MVPs were San Beda’s Ana Ysa Declaro (midgets), Miriam’s Nell Frances Saclot (juniors) and CEU’s Jely Mae Sto. Tomas.

RTU also claimed its third straight senior futsal crown with a 1-0 decision over Philippine Women’s University while San Beda took the midgets title after a 2-0 blanking of Miriam.

Up next for the country’s only tri-level league for women are badminton, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo and the cheerdance and cheerleading competition next year.
