'Donaire vs Rigondeaux needs to happen soon'
MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. will have to face Guillermo Rigondeaux soon to establish true supremacy in the super bantamweight (junior featherweight) division, according to RING Magazine.
Donaire recently disposed Toshiaki Nishioka in nine rounds to defend the World Boxing Organization and International Boxing Federation super bantamweight titles. The Filipino also won the RING Magazine super bantamweight and World Boxing Council Diamond belt in the process.
“The question that needs to be answered is when will Donaire fight Guillermo Rigondeaux, the undefeated 122-pound beltholder who assumed THE RING’s No. 1 ranking in the wake of Nishioka’s loss?” said RingTV’s Chuck Giampa.
Rigondeaux, nicknamed The Jackal, owns the World Boxing Association version of the super bantamweight title. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, who ruled the Games’ amateur bantamweight class.
Donaire, however, had said Rigondeaux needs to fight big named guys first before getting to him.
“He [Rigondeaux] needs more guys for me to get excited. I have to be excited about the fight or else I’m going to get bored like you’ve seen in the last few fights,” the Filipino Flash said after defeating Nishioka.
The unbeaten Rigondeaux, a Cuban defector, only has 11 professional wins on his name. Donaire, on the other hand, has 30 wins against one defeat.
But Giampa said the only way to test if Rigondeaux deserves his No. 1 status in the RING's super bantamweight list is to pit him against newly crowned RING champion Donaire.
"This is a fight that needs to happen sooner rather than later in order to test each of these warriors," he said.
