Petron's Arwind Santos named MVP
Calvin Abueva is Rookie of the Year
MANILA -- Petron's Arwind Santos finally bagged the Philippine Basketball Association's top individual award in the league's 38th season.
Santos was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the awarding ceremonies on Friday prior to Game 4 of the Governors Cup Finals between the San Miguel Coffee Mixers and Petron Blaze Boosters.
It was Santos's first time to win the award since joining the PBA in 2006.
For the last five years, Santos came close to winning the award but was outdone by Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa (2012), TNT’s Jimmy Alapag (2011), James Yap of San Mig Coffee (2010), Ginebra’s Jayjay Helterbrand (2009) and Kelly Williams when he was still with the now-defunct Sta. Lucia Realty (2008), according to a report on Spin.ph
Santos bested other favorites Calvin Abueva and Jayson Castro.
All three, however, made it to the Mythical First Team, where they are joined by Air 21's Ranidel de Ocampo and Ginebra's LA Tenorio.
Alaska's Abueva also earned Rookie of the Year honors, while Air 21's Nino Canaleta was named Most Improved Player.
San Miguel's Marc Pingris, Petron's Marcio Lassiter and Santos, Rain or Shine's Gabe Norwood and Sonny Thoss were named to the All-Defensive Team.
Alaska's Jayvee Casio was given the Sportsmanship award.
