RP jins come home empty-handed
MANILA – The Philippines’ taekwondo jins may have put up a good fight but it was not enough to win medals at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships.
Maria Roxas, the last Filipino jin standing on Sunday, failed to get past Chang Chueh of Chinese Taipei in the Round of 32, according to the event’s results page.
Roxas lost her women under 62 kg match, 5-9, at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark.
She won her first round match against Venera Abdurazakova of Uzbekistan, 6-3.
Aside from Roxas, other Filipinos who competed in Copenhagen were Olympians Toni Rivero and Tshomlee Go. The other jins who joined them were Marlon Avenido, Nicole Mapilisan, Alexander Briones, Kathleen Alora, Karla Alava, Kristie Alora, Jyra Lizardo, Jeffrey Figueroa and Japoy Lizardo.
The World Taekwondo Championships ran from October 14 to 18.
The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) said in a report on the event’s website that the World Championships were the “biggest in history.”
“Over 1000 participants, five courts, the new electronic body protectors, and the video replay. This is a truly fantastic World Championships. We are making history,” said Chakir Chelbalt, vice-president of the WTF referee’s committee.
