Morales fails drug test, but Garcia fight still on
MANILA, Philippines – Former world boxing champion Erik Morales failed a random drug test ahead of his title fight against junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia on Saturday.
Golden Boy Promotions’ Richard Schaefer said the US Doping Agency (USADA) discovered "irregularities in an A sample from Erik Morales,” indicating that the former four-division world champion may have tested positive for a banned substance.
"We were informed late on Tuesday night by USADA that they found some irregularities in an A sample from Erik Morales, and on Wednesday -- yesterday morning -- the respective camps and the commission were informed accordingly by USADA," said Schaefer in RingTV.
But the Morales-Garcia fight is likely to go on, according to ESPN.
The reason the fight has not been called off, according to ESPN’s sources, is that they are still waiting for the results of the "B" sample test.
The B sample test won't be available until after the fight.
"As far as I know, the fight is going on," one of the sources told ESPN.com. "There is nothing that can be done to stop it" because the "B" sample test result has not yet been disclosed.”
Morales reportedly tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, which is typically used for breathing disorders but also is used as a weight-loss aid.
Morales, who lost two of his three fights against Manny Pacquiao in 2006, will clash against Garcia at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
