RP pool heavyweights continue winning run in US 9-Ball
Four Filipino billiard heavyweights extended their winning streak during Round Three of the 33rd US Open 9-Ball tournament at the Chesapeake Conference Center in Chesapeake, Virginia Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).
Former double world champion (WPA 9-ball and WPA 8-ball) Ronato "Volcano" Alcano and ex-national champion Lee Vann "The Slayer Corteza toyed with their foes while billiard legends Jose "Amang" Parica and Francisco "Django" Bustamante survived dangerous opponents.
Alcano nipped Mitch Ellerman, 11-10, to arrange a Round Four face-off with Canadian Tyley Edey, who won over Harvey Shognosh, 11-4. The “Volcano” is trying to surpass his runner-up finish last year to Shane "The South Dakota Kid" Van Boening of the US.
Corteza, meanwhile, scored an 11-10 win over Tony Chohan. His next assignment will be Shannon Daulton, who drubbed Beau Runningen, 11-2.
Parica regained his old deadly form in his 11-7 conquest of David Broxson to arrange a fourth round skirmish against Swedish Marcus Chamat.
Bustamante notched an 11-10 squeaker over Indian Imran Majid. The former World No.1 will square off with reigning World 10-Ball king Darren "Dynamite" Appleton of UK in Round Four.
Despite the successful games of the four Filipino cue artists, the RP contingent also suffered heavy losses.
Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat lost to Nick Varner, 11-10; Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego yielded to Tony Robles, 11-5; and Warren "Warrior" Kiamco bowed to Josh Lewis, 11-9.
Other renowned cue masters who advanced to the next round were Van Boening, Johny Archer, Charlie Williams, and Stevie Moore of the US; reigning World 9-ball Champion Daryl Peach and Chris Melling of Great Britain; and Mika Immonen of Finland.
A total of $250,000 prize is at stake in US Open 9-Ball. The top winner will get $40,000.
