BACOLOD, Philippines – The Sandugo-University Games fires off today at the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod here with student-athletes from 51 schools vying in 13 sports, including athletics and medal-rich swimming.
The powerhouse National Capital Region contingent will be represented by 14 colleges and university while nine schools will banner the hosts’ campaign in the week-long meet.
Other events on tap in the annual sportsfest, founded in 1996 by the late Bro. Rolando Dizon of La Salle, are basketball, volleyball, football, beach volley, badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis, karatedo, chess and sepak takraw.
Focus, however, will be on basketball which features UAAP five-peat champion Ateneo and this year’s losing finalist University of Santo Tomas.
The Eagles, to be handled by Gabby Severino, open their title-retention bid against the University of San Jose-Recoletos side at 12 noon today at the USLS gym.
Ateneo beat West Negros in last year’s finals in Roxas City.
In other matches, University of the East faces University of Northern Phl at 7:30 a.m., University of San Agustin collides with Polytechnic University of the Phl at 9 a.m. and Ateneo de Davao squares off with St. La Salle at 10:30 a.m.
Volleyball is also expected to generate interest with the La Salle-Bacolod Lady Stingers raring to flaunt their wares for a second straight championship.
Far Eastern U is also expected to field a strong delegation in men’s and women’s track and field, men’s volleyball, women’s football and women’s chess where the Morayta-based school is the defending champion.
University of the East, meanwhile, is fancied to dominate men’s and women’s badminton in the event bankrolled by Sandugo.
