MANILA, Philippines - Unless he gets what he wants or what he deserves, Jorge Arce will not climb the ring against reigning WBO super-bantamweight king Nonito Donaire Jr.
The 33-year-old Mexican, who’s been into bloody fights perhaps like no one else in boxing, will fight the red-hot Filipino champion only if the price is right.
“I’m not asking for the pearls of the virgin. I’m demanding just what I think the price is worth,” said Arce, a former champion in four different weight classes.
Arce told www.boxingscene.com a few days ago that he’s ready to fight anyone, including Donaire.
“I am ready, as everyone knows I am ready to fight and end of the year with drums beating. I would be happy to take that fight but I hope I get the price,” he said.
Arce was previously mentioned as Donaire’s opponent for last week. But it failed to push through because he didn’t like or didn’t accept what was offered him.
Instead, Donaire fought Toshiaki Nishioka in Carson City, and scored a ninth-round technical knockout.
There are many fights to choose from for Donaire, a certified superstar, and they include Abner Mares, Guillermo Rigondeaux or Anselmo Moreno. But as of now, he’s looking at Arce.
It will be great to put up the Donaire-Arce fight and even greater for fight fans to see it. It’ll be a sure hit and if staged in Mexico where Arce has a tremendous following.
Donaire, who earned around $800,000 for the Nishioka fight, told Pinoy scribes over the weekend that he likes Arce because the Mexican’s style is tailor-made for me.
The feeling is mutual.
“I’m not impressed (with Donaire). He’s not the monster they believe he is. What happens is that (his opponents) have too much respect they pull punches, start to survive and allow him to come in,” Arce said.
“I think Donaire has faced fighters who are afraid. I’m not going to have any respect,” the Mexican matador who has won world titles in the light-fly, super-fly, bantam and super-bantam told Boxing Scene.
Bob Arum of Top Rank wants Dec. 15 for the Donaire-Arce fight in Mexico City or just a week after Manny Pacquiao faces Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas.
The announcement may come anytime this week.
