Amid TV debut, Jeron says showbiz 'least priority'
MANILA -- La Salle basketball star Jeron Teng explained why he accepted a guest role in the ABS-CBN hit series "Got to Believe."
"Now, it's off-season so I'm really open to any... I'm opening my doors," he said in an interview with ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual on Wednesday, referring to joining showbiz. "Pero for a while lang, kasi pagdating ng practice, limited na ulit 'yung time ko."
His "Got to Believe" stint will have him appear alongside teen stars Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo.
This isn't the first time Teng is meeting them, however, as he participated in the "Princess and I" grand fans day last year as a player for Padilla's basketball team.
"Princess and I" was the first primetime series that featured the team-up of Beraardo and Padilla. It held a big gathering of fans in June last year leading up to its finale.
While he is thrilled to join "Got to Believe" as a cast member, Teng assured his fans that he continues to prioritize his collegiate basketball career.
"My priorities will still be the same. First is my studies, then basketball. Medyo least priority ko 'yung extra-curriculars," he said.
Calling the support of his and Jeric's fans "priceless," the younger Teng added, "Sobrang thankful ako sa mga sumusuporta sa amin, because they don't only support us in basketball but even outside. All our guestings, they try to go. So we're just so happy to have them to support us."
Despite enjoying success in basketball, as well as the public support that comes with it, Teng is cautious to remain humble.
"My parents taught my brother and I to really be humble and to stay grounded talaga. Because God, you know, if you start bragging, he won't bless you anymore," he said.
On crush Jessy
Meanwhile, Teng readily answered questions about "Maria Mercedes" actress Jessy Mendiola, who was earlier identified as his "biggest crush" in showbiz.
The UAAP Finals MVP openly expressed his attraction to the 24-year-old star.
"Top of my mind, she's really my crush," Teng said. "Pero marami akong crush talaga, pero ngayon siya 'yung pinaka-crush ko dahil sa 'Maria Mercedes.'"
In earlier interviews, Teng's older brother and basketball rival, Jeric, also identified Mendiola as his celebrity crush.
Asked what qualities attracted him to Mendiola, the younger Teng said, "I just admire her for not only outside, but also her talent. Magaling siya mag-act talaga, so I really admire her."
Mendiola, in a separate interview on Tuesday, said she is aware of the Teng brothers' apparent crush on her. Noting she had only interacted with them on Twitter, the actress added she is open to meeting them in person.
