Danny Espiritu Cup finals set
MANILA, Philippines – MOB secured a ticket to the Finals of the 2013 Danny Espiritu Cup but not before needing an extra meeting to eliminate Sealions in the semi-finals.
After dropping Game 1, MOB bounced back for an 83-74 win in the do-or-die game to arrange a face-off with Skyforce in the best-of-three finals beginning October 24.
MOB, which had a twice-to-beat advantage after sweeping the elimination round, dropped the first game against Sealions, 86-89.
In their second meeting, MOB banked on a better finishing kick to get the job done against the veteran Sealions.
Veteran guard Egay Billones averaged 24 points for Sealions in two games, but fell short of rallying his team to the finals.
The superb quarter-backing of Jeff Viernes, meanwhile, carried MOB down the stretch as he either scored or assisted in seven of their last 11 points in the game.
Viernes led MOB with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists and is expected to take on the lead role anew in the Finals.
Game 1 is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Letran Gym, where Viernes will go head-to-head against Skyforce’s veteran leader Leo Avenido.
Letran Gym will also host Game 2 on October 27, and if the series goes the distance, the winner-take-all match is slated on October 29 at the Lyceum Gym.
