'Filipino Freddie Roach' says he still has a lot to learn
MANILA, Philippines – Trainer Marvin Somodio was touted the “Filipino Freddie Roach” by Russian boxer Ruslan Provodnikov after he helped the fighter win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightwelterweight belt.
Somodio usually works as Roach’s assistant, but the Filipino had to take the lead role in Provodnikov’s corner as the Hall-of-Fame trainer is busy working with Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao in General Santos City.
With Somodio in his corner, Provodnikov defeated Mike Alvarado to win the WBO championship.
In an interview with PhilBoxing, Somodio told Rich Mazon that he still has a lot to learn as a trainer.
“Nag-iisa lang si Freddie Roach,” Somodio said. “Nagpapasalamat (ako) dahil tinuruan at pinagkakatiwalaan niya ako sa maliit o malalki mang laban.”
“Marami pa akong kakaining bigas,” he added.
Somodio said he was thankful not only to Roach, but also to Provodnikov who trusted him during the fight.
“Sobrang saya ko. Pangarap ko rin kasi na pagdating ng araw, makikita ng buong mundo na di lang magaling sa pakikipagsuntukan ang mga Pilipino,” he said. “Gusto ko rin makilala tayo na magaling magturo sa pakikipagsuntukan.”
Somodio, who worked with Roach in Pacquiao’s corner for the boxer’s last two fights, stressed that his career as a trainer is just starting.
“Alam ko na nagu-umpisa pa lang ako, at patuloy pang natututo,” he said.
