Pacquiao's training intensifies as Rios fight nears
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao has not missed any morning workout as he continues his intense training for his upcoming fight against American boxer Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios.
His morning routine includes a run, some sprints, shadow boxing and a series of tough abdominal exercises.
At midday on Tuesday, Pacquiao sparred eight hard rounds – four with Frederick Lawson of Ghana, and another four rounds against British light middleweight Liam Vaughan.
Pacquiao wobbled Lawson with a strong left, and was even more lethal against Vaughan. He unleashed a solid left to the Brit’s solar plexus that made Vaughan grimace in pain.
“He’s good, the best he’s been. He was on fire today,” Vaughan said, adding that it will be Pacquiao’s body shots that will be most dangerous against Rios.
“I told him the body shots will knock Rios out,” he said.
Meanwhile, Coach Freddie Roach was happy with the improvement that Pacquiao is showing.
“He worked the mitts quite a bit, the timing is coming, and the stamina is really good today,” Roach said.
Boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz was also impressed with Pacquiao’s movement with still five weeks to go before the fight.
After sparring, Pacquiao worked on the heavy bag then followed it up with a punishing plyometrics workout.
“Heavy training lang ang capital natin sa laban na ito,” said Pacquiao. “Kailangan mag-work hard. Kino-control natin kasi malayo pa, baka ma-overtrain tayo.” – Report from Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News
