Petron survives, forces Game 7
MANILA (UPDATED) - The Petron Blaze Boosters survived a late scare and beat the San Mig Coffee Mixers, 99-88, Wednesday night at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
With the win, the Blaze Boosters tied the series at 3-3 and forced a decisive Game 7.
Import Elijah Millsap led Petron again, finishing the game with 30 points and 6 assists, while rookie June Mar Fajardo maintained a consistent finals performance with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
The Blaze Boosters lost a 16-point second half lead as the Coffee Mixers bounced back early in the 4th quarter, going on a 12-4 run to tie the game, 80-80.
PJ Simon, who finished the game with 14 points, even took the lead for the Coffee Mixers, 86-85, as he drove past Millsap at the 5-minute mark.
But Millsap, along with baskets from Chris Lutz and Alex Cabagnot, regained the lead for the Blaze Boosters, 93-86, with the game approaching the final two minutes.
Petron's early lead proved to be too much for the Coffee Mixers as they lost steam heading into the final minute. They managed to score only 2 points and the Blaze Boosters ran away with the victory, 99-88.
"It's Game 7 of the Finals. It's a dream of coaches and players," said Petron coach Gee Abanilla.
Marqus Blakely led the scoring for the Coffee Mixers with 21 points, while other import Joe Devance and James Yap each pitched in 17.
"We certainly had our chances," said Coffee Mixers head coach Tim Cone. "We wanted to avoid a winner-take-all game, too many things can happen."
Game 7 will be held on October 25 (Friday) at SMART Araneta Coliseum.
