MANILA -- Burger King banked on Mark Yee and Ronjay Buenafe in the final quarter to turn back Rain or Shine, 91-89, for its second win in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Saturday night at the Arturo S. Lugod gym in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

The Whoppers squandered an early 17-point lead and was held down to just 6 points in the third period, allowing the Elasto Painters to control the game behind Ryan Arana’s hot-shooting.

But Burger King kept its composure and turned to Yee and Buenafe in the last 7 minutes of the contest to level its win-loss mark to 2-2.

Buenafe led the Whoppers with 19 points while Yee chipped in 14, 12 of them came in the fourth period where Burger King rebounded from 11 points down with over 7 minutes left.

Arana fired 25 points but missed an important free throw in the closing seconds, paving the way for Buenafe’s basket just 1.6 seconds left.

Buenafe was fouled by Jay-R Reyes for a three-point play but missed the bonus shot. Gabe Norwood tried a miraculous heave but failed to make the shot.

The loss was the third in a row for Rain or Shine, which joined Smart Gilas national team and Coca-Cola at the bottom of team standings with 0-3 mark apiece.

It was a sorry loss indeed for Elasto Painters head coach Caloy Garcia, who appeared to have the game in the bag after outscoring the Whoppers in the third period, 22-6, to carry a 69-61 lead.

Arana’s steal off Carlo Sharma led to his break-away lay-up giving Rain or Shine a comfortable 78-67 cushion with 7:39 remaining.

But Mark Yee and Richard Yee combined forces in a crucial 9-4 exchange to stay within the game at 76-82 before Norwood knocked in a jumper to make it 84-76 for the Elasto Painters.

Burger King coach Yeng Guiao inserted Buenafe in the game to replace the struggling Gary David, who finished with just 3 points in the contest, and that proved to be the key as the former Emilio Aguinaldo College standout sparked the team’s rally.
