San Sebastian's Abueva named NCAA MVP

MANILA, Philippines - Calvin Abueva of the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags was named Most Valuable Player of NCAA Season 87 after a dominant season wherein he showcased an improved all-around game.

Abueva led the league in scoring and rebounding, with 21.5 points and 13.6 rebounds per game. He showed great improvement in his passing, tallying 3.9 assists per outing.

Abueva helped the San Sebastian Golden Stags compile a 16-2 record in the elimination round. They will face rival San Beda College Red Lions in the NCAA Finals for the 3rd straight season.

Joining Abueva in the NCAA Mythical Five is teammate Ian Sangalang (16.2 ppg, 11.4 rpg), San Beda's Garvo Lanete (18.6 ppg, 2.2 apg), Letran's Raymond Almazan (7.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.6 bpg) and Letran's Kevin Alas (17.5 ppg, 5.4 apg).

San Sebastian's Sangalang was also named Defensive Player of the Year, with averages of 11.4 rebounds per game (2nd in the league) and 2.4 blocks per game (2nd in the league).

Letran's Almazan was named Most Improved Player of the Year, while Josan Nimes of the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals was named Rookie of the Year.

Nimes averaged 15.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in his rookie season.
