Benguet lass is 1st Pinay ONE FC fighter
MANILA – Taking the cue from female MMA sensation Ronda Rousey, former Filipina boxing champion Jujeath Nagaowa will be throwing her hat into the MMA cage when she fights in ONE FC this December.
The 26-year-old lass from Benguet will be making her MMA debut in "ONE FC: Moment of Truth" on December 6 at the MOA Arena to become the first Filipina mixed martial artist to fight in ONE FC.
“‘Yung MMA po para sa akin, very exciting. Masarap ‘pag pinapanood kasi. Challenging, parang nandoon na lahat,” Nagaowa said during the announcement of ONE FC: Moment of Truth at the Midas Hotel and Casino on Thursday.
Although ONE FC has yet to name her opponent, the 5’0” Filipina, who idolizes the likes of UFC female champion Ronda Rousey, is already excited to face the opposition.
Nagaowa entered the world of combat sports as a college student to augment her finances. She said fighting helped her finish her studies.
“Lumaki ako sa hirap… Nung nagboxing ako ng pro, college ako nun. Doon ko na kinukuha yung panggastos ko sa school.”
The highlight of her seven-year boxing career was her three-round stoppage of Aisah Alico, which gave her the vacant WBC Asia female atomweight crown.
Nagaowa, however, was attracted by the excitement an MMA fight brings.
“Excited, pressured and happy [akong mag-MMA]. Pangarap ko talaga ‘yun,” she said.
Nagaowa admitted that her parents do worry about her fighting professionally. But although they do not admit it, she knows they are proud of her every win.
“Naririnig ko sa ibang tao na proud sila sa ‘kin,” she said, beaming.
