Pacquiao enjoying GenSan training
MANILA – Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao is enjoying training in his hometown of General Santos City for his upcoming showdown against hard-hitting American brawler Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios in November.
For his previous fights, Pacquiao usually trained in Baguio City before moving to the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles – but that was when his fights were held in Las Vegas. With the Rios bout to be held in Macau, it made more sense for Pacquiao to train in his hometown.
“Happy ako na dito ang training. Matagal-tagal na ang panahon na hindi ako dito nagte-training,” said Pacquiao, who is seeking to snap a two-fight losing streak on November 24.
When he trained in the United States, it became part of Pacquiao’s routine to run in Griffith Park. In General Santos, he is also building up his endurance by running from the border of GenSan and Sarangani all the way to Maasim.
The endurance run finishes at the Pacman Beach property in Saranggani.
Meanwhile, trainer Freddie Roach is also happy with how their training camp is going.
“GenSan’s been great. We have a nice gym, we have the equipment we need, and the people are just crazy in love with me,” said Roach, who added that there have been no distractions for Pacquiao.
Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum arrived in GenSan yesterday to observe Pacquiao’s training session, and believed that the one-year lay-off between fights will be beneficial for the Pacman.
“I’m looking forward to Macau and for this great event with Manny Pacquiao and Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios,” said Arum. -- From a report by Dyan Castillejo, ABS-CBN News.
