Tagaytay-PH beats Baghdad in Asian Cities chess
MANILA – The Tagaytay-PH team continued its winning run in the 2013 Asian Cities Chess Championship after blanking Baghdad, 4-0, in the fifth round of the tournament last Wednesday at the Tagaytay International Convention Center.
With its victory over the eighth-seeded Baghdad, Tagaytay-PH now has a total of 10 points through five rounds of competition.
Grand Master (GM) Oliver Barbosa defeated Zozek Salah Mohammed on Board One; GM Mark Paragua beat Fide Master Akar Ali Salih on Board Two; GM John Paul Gomez beat FM Ali Layth Ahmed on Board Three; and GM Darwin Laylo completed the rout by beating Namir Mohammed Ismael on Board Four.
Meanwhile, the third-seeded Wu Xu team from China defeated the fourth-seeded Philippine Sports Commission – Manila team, 3-1, to climb to solo second place with eight points.
The Pasay – Philippine Air Force team routed Colombo, 4-0.
The nine-round, Swiss-system tournament uses the match-point system, which awards two points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero for a loss.
The champion team will receive $3000, with the second and third placers receiving $2000 and $1000, respectively. -- By Marlon Bernardino
