Roach wants to slow down Pacquiao a bit in training
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Freddie Roach would like his prized pupil Manny Pacquiao to cut back on training to avoid getting burned out before the Filipino’s comeback fight against Brandon Rios this November.
With just a month to go before the November 24 fight date, Roach said Pacquiao needs to taper down his training a bit.
“We need to slow him down and make the pace a little bit slower," he said in an interview with Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz.
"It is very difficult to hold Manny Pacquiao back but sometimes we've got to hold on and tackle him but he knows, he has common sense so we'll make the workouts a little shorter and not so many rounds of sparring," Roach said.
Since Pacquiao’s already 34 years old, his team deemed it wiser for him to reserve energy for the big fight.
An overtrained Pacquiao might find himself vulnerable in front of a younger and hungry fighter like “Bam Bam” Rios.
Pacquiao is scheduled to collide with Rios at The Venetian Macau less than a month from now.
The Filipino boxer will be coming off from a sixth-round knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December.
