BOSTON - Boston Celtics forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis is expected to miss six weeks with a broken thumb which he sustained in a fight with a friend, the Boston Herald reported on Tuesday.

Davis had the surgery on Tuesday at a Boston area hospital, the National Basketball Association team said.

But the newspaper reported that Davis was involved in a fight with a friend on Sunday that left Davis with the injury.

The team is also expected to tack on a suspension for Davis who issued an apology through the club's public releations department.

"I would first like to apologize to my fans, teammates, coaches and the entire Celtics organization. I am extremely disappointed that this incident occurred and that it will prevent me from starting the season with the rest of my teammates," Davis' said in a statement. "My teammates and the entire Celtics organization are extremely important to me and I will do my best to expedite the healing process and be back on the court as soon as possible."

Boston signed Davis to a two-year contract for $6.3 million in the offseason. He averaged 7.0 points per game during the regular season last year.
