Donaire works out to shed excess weight for Nov. 1 fight
With his fight just four days away, IBF flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire said he is working out to keep his weight down and make the 112-pound limit before facing challenger Moruti Mthalane of South Africa.
Donaire will be defending his title against Mthalane on November 1 (November 2 in Manila) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada.
A report posted on PhilBoxing.com said Donaire weighed 114 pounds on Tuesday.
Donaire said he was “still working out to maintain the weight” and that after a workout on Sunday, he weighed 113 pounds so it shouldn’t be a problem making the flyweight limit.
In a separate report posted on TheSweetScience.com, Donaire said he has to keep his A-game going into the fight, protecting his title with the same intensity he had when he won it 15 months ago against Armenian Vic Darchinyan.
“For me to get going, I tell myself this is the title we’re fighting for. This is not my title yet until I really feel that I own this title. That’s why I’m going into this ring as hungry as I came into the ring with Darchinyan.” The stylish champion won the title with the 2007 “Knockout of the Year” when he nailed the cocky Darchinyan with a picture-perfect hook to the jaw.
Donaire said his team has already prepared a strategy against Mthalane.
“The guy can be tough if you take him lightly. We’ve already come up with a game plan that if I throw out this punch and it lands, I know I can take him out,” he said.
