Alaska's 'The Beast' named Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines – Alaska rookie Calvin Abueva has been named PBA Player of the Week for the period of October 22-28 after leading the Aces to back-to-back victories in the Philippine Cup last week.
Abueva, nicknamed "The Beast," averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last week for the Aces while making several game-changing plays.
"He is a ball of energy who brings so much passion to the game for us," said Alaska head coach Luigi Trillo in an interview with PBA.ph.
Abueva, picked second in the PBA Rookie Draft, completed his NCAA career at San Sebastian and immediately made an impact for Alaska despite being an undersized forward in the PBA.
"We are using him at the forward position. We have not even tried him out in the wing or point guard position. I cannot remember a (local) player who could play all five positions," Trillo said.
"He reminds me of our past import – Sean Chambers," he added. "Undersized with a very big heart."
Against Air21, Abueva scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in their 92-81 victory. He added 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal in their 87-69 rout of Ginebra last Sunday.
Abueva has normed 15.7 points and 12.3 rebounds in his first three games as a pro, all Alaska wins. The Aces have now won four straight games after opening their season with back-to-back losses.
"(Abueva) is really a game-changer. When he comes in, you feel na nakaka-intimidate siya. And to do it at the 4 (power forward) spot. It's amazing. He's (just) 6-foot-1," Trillo said.
