MANILA, Philippines – Filipino fight king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao still has a long way to go before achieving tip-top shape for his December 8 fight, according to his trainer, Freddie Roach.
Pacquiao started training with Roach at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood earlier this week for his fourth bout against his great rival, Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico.
Roach told PhilBoxing that they had a “good day” at the start of training camp.
“We still have a long way to go,” Roach told Eddie Alinea. “It’s only the start of a final six weeks of preparations, but I think, as reports from Manila said, Manny’s really prepared to punish himself in training here.”
“If Manny can maintain this same dedication and enthusiasm the rest of the way, then I can say we will have another successful camp here and accomplish what we’re aiming for,” he added.
Pacquiao started training in the Philippines under the supervision of his good friend Buboy Fernandez.
“I’m really thirsty to do my things inside the ring,” Pacquiao told PhilBoxing. “I’ve been inactive for the last four or five months... Hatak na hatak na ako sa ensayo sa Pilipinas pa lang.”
Roach has lined up some of Pacquiao’s old sparring partners, including Rey Beltran and Ruslan Provodnikov. PhilBoxing reported that welterweight prospect Frank Gomez will also spar with Pacquiao after his fight this Friday.
