MANILA, Philippines – Despite a sluggish performance, the San Miguel Coffee Mixers managed to pull off an 82-78 win against GlobalPort Batang Pier in their PBA Philippine Cup clash at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

The win helped the Mixers establish a 4-2 record, good for a share of the 2nd spot in the league standings.

"I'll take ugly wins," said San Miguel Coffee coach Tim Cone in PBA.ph. "Hopefully, we can win pretty down the line."

Even though GlobalPort dropped to 1-6, it was able to give San Mig Coffee a good fight.

Batang Pier coach Glenn Capacio said he was proud of his team’s tenacity.

"Hats off ako sa mga bata," said Capacio. "Kahit ganito ang record, di ako nahihiya. Alam ko maganda ang itinatakbo ng team. Positive pa rin ako."

Cone, on the other hand, scolded his team for its lethargic performance against the gritty GlobalPort.

"You cannot simply walk on to the court and expect to win," he said. "I was trying to explain that to our guys, that we've got to do more than show up and play, especially in the professional level."

The Batang Pier nearly won the game if not for two crucial mistakes down the stretch.

Willie Miller missed an attempt after a free throw split by Mark Barroca. This was followed by Vic Manuel’s botched attempt that could have tied the game 80-all.

The errant plays took place in the final 15 seconds of the game.

Andy Barroca sealed the win for San Mig Coffee by sinking both of his charities off Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s foul.

Prior the missteps, GlobalPort was in the lead for most part of the game.

James Yap started the turnaround for the Mixers by escaping Mark Yee's defense and scoring 11 straight points in the fourth quarter for a 79-78 San Mig Coffee lead, 38.8 seconds left.

Yap finished 16 points, while Marc Pingris added 17 markers and 16 rebounds.

Miller churned out 19 points for Batang Pier to go with his 10 rebounds, while Manuel also had a double-double of 17 and 10.
