Title shot awaits Marquez after Pacquiao fight
MANILA, Philippines – A world title shot awaits Juan Manuel Marquez, win or lose against Manny Pacquiao.
According to the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Marquez has the option to fight the winner of the Brandon Rios-Ruslan Provodnikov WBO junior welterweight title clash.
The WBO has already declared Marquez’s WBO junior welterweight throne vacant as the Mexican climbs the welterweight division to fight Pacquiao.
"Right now he has the fight against Pacquiao and if he wins, then he will fight the best there is at welterweight. It could be [Timothy] Bradley or even a fifth fight against Pacquiao. So the title will remain inactive. The title has not defended since he won it against Fedchenko [in April]. Therefore, the determination was to vacate the title," WBO President Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel said in Boxing Scene.
But Valcarcel said Marquez will retain the privileges of a WBO "super champion," giving the Mexican counterpuncher an option to reclaim his old belt.
The WBO president added that they already have set down an 80-20 purse split in favor of the Mexican, if he decides to fight the winner of the Rios-Provodnikov bout.
“The purse bid would be 80 to 20 in favor of Juan Manuel because of the [high number] of purses that he earned [in his career]. So there is no financial harm [to Marquez] and [at the same time] we would have an active title," said Valcarcel.
