Banchero wants to win title with Boracay Rum
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Italian point guard Chris Banchero had a promising start to his career in the PBA D-League, as he led the Boracay Rum Waves to an 86-59 victory over the Derulo Accelero last Tuesday.
Banchero, the top pick in the first-ever PBA D-League draft, has bigger plans for the Waves, however.
“I want to win a championship for Boracay,” said Banchero after scoring 15 points and dishing out four assists to lead the Waves.
“To be able to do that, I have to get my teammates involved… This team is not about me,” he added.
Banchero had been a star for the San Miguel Beermen in the ASEAN Basketball League, but he acknowledged that the style of play is different in the D-League.
“It’s a lot physical here, and you get away with a lot of it,” he said. “But that’s good, because that’s how it is in the PBA.”
Prior to Banchero’s debut, Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson sang praises for the point guard.
“Chris has been a great energy guy, and a positive influence to his teammates,” Chongson said in a report on the league website. “He is very coachable, and very determined to help the team win.”
