ILOILO CITY, Philippines  – The heavily favored Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles went through a wringer before subduing St. Francis of Assisi College, 75-66, in Friday’s 14th UniGames men’s basketball finals to retain the crown they also won last year in Dumaguete.

The Eagles again swept all their games as the Adamson Lady Falcons tripped the Far Eastern U Tamaraws, 79-77, in overtime to rule the ladies division.

In football the University of Sto. Tomas edged out La Salle, 1-0, in the women’s division while West Negros U blanked St Benilde, 2-0.

Manila colleges and universities dominated the UniGames, hosted by Central Philippine University, with Rizal Technological U, UST, and St. Benilde winning four events each.

RTU ruled men’s and women’s taekwondo, men’s athletics and sepak takraw. UST reigned in the women’s athletics, women’s football, and men’s and women’s volleyball, while St. Benilde dominated both the men’s and ladies lawn tennis events, men’s chess, and women’s table tennis.

FEU and Adamson University grabbed two events each with FEU winning the men’s table tennis and women’s chess while Adamson added women’s softball title to its women’s basketball crown.

San Beda College won 15 of 16 events in men’s swimming while UP Diliman swept all the 16 events in the distaff side.

University of the East won the men’s badminton, De La Salle-Dasmariñas triumphed in the women’s beach volleyball, and Ateneo prevailed in men’s basketball.

Only three events escaped the Manila contingent as West Negros University was men’s football champion, University of Southern Philippines Foundation took home the men’s beach volleyball crown, and Iloilo Doctors College dominated the women’s badminton event.

“We are very happy with the turn out of schools for this year’s UniGames which may be held in Dumaguete again with Silliman University expressing interest in hosting together with the city and provincial governments there, “ said Unigames president Roger Banzuela.
