Pacquiao hosts Halloween party in Chinatown
LOS ANGELES, California - Straight from his daily practice, Filipino boxing champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao hosted a Halloween and birthday bash for his close friends in Los Angeles' Chinatown.
Costumes, cake, food and a singing Elvis impersonator were all present as the best boxer in the world celebrated Halloween.
"Para sa mga bata," Pacquiao said of his party, adding, "Ako ang judge for best costume."
Some of the costumes were scary while others were funny, and a few were quite revealing. Almost everyone, especially the children, dressed for the occasion, including former boxing champion Rodel Mayol.
Neither Pacquiao nor best friend Buboy Fernandez came in costume, but the pound-for-pound king judged the costume contest, while Fernandez handed out cash prizes to the winners.
"Masaya, nagpapasalamat ako kay Manny Pacquiao, every year ginagawa n'ya 'to," said Rhen Fuentes, who was the birthday celebrator and the winner for best costume.
"So lahat kami, hindi lang Team Pacquiao, lahat kami masaya. Magbibigay kami lahat ng effort para mapasaya s'ya," Fuentes added.
Christy Williamson, winner of best female costume, was at a loss for words after her victory.
"It's insane, I don't even know what to say. I'm shaking right now," she said.
Los Angeles Lakers superstar Ron Artest also joined the festivities, bringing his half-Filipino son who showed up in a skeleton mask.
Artest plans to watch Pacquiao's November 12 match against Juan Manuel Marquez, saying, "I think it's going to be a great fight. I watched both fights, they could've gone either way. Manny and Marquez are great fighters."
A playful Pacquiao stayed for most of the night as his party of close to 300 guests continued playing Halloween games. Many of his guests took home treats, totalling over $12,000 in cash prizes.
With the most intense phase of training camp over, Halloween proved to be a fun-filled night for Pacquiao to relax. With fight night coming closer, Pacquiao will be winding down his workouts for the next two weeks.
