Mayweather says Pacquiao is desperate
MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has spoken up about a potential mega-fight against Filipino fight king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao after a lengthy silence on the issue.
Mayweather has kept mostly silent since getting released from jail last August, but in an interview with Fight Hype last October 31, he revealed his thoughts on a possible fight against Pacquiao.
“You have to realize this: in my opinion, Manny Pacquiao is desperate,” Mayweather said. “He doesn’t make his own decisions, because Manny Pacquiao has a boss, his promoter, that makes his decisions.”
Several issues continue to block the Pacquiao-Mayweather mega-fight, including Mayweather’s refusal to accept a 50-50 split of the revenue. Even after Pacquiao said he is willing to take the smaller share of a 55-45 split, the American boxer remained unmoved.
“Once you take a loss and you’re on the decline... Manny Pacquiao, whether he got cheated or not, his stock drops enormously after taking a loss. No matter how you took a loss, you took an L,” Mayweather said.
Mayweather stressed that not only has Pacquiao failed to live up to his standards in his recent fights, the Filipino fighter also does not bring in the kind of money that he does in the box office.
“Unless I’m mistaken, Manny Pacquiao received a check for $6 million the night of his last fight, according to the bout agreement,” Mayweather claimed.
“How can a $6-million fighter, who don’t even do the type of numbers that I do or bring in the type of revenue that I bring in, even offer me anything?” he questioned.
“Like I said before, last fight, we don’t even know what his numbers were. My fights, they’re putting the official numbers out there. HBO always puts the official numbers out there, right?”
Mayweather claimed that HBO does not show the official numbers of Pacquiao’s pay-per-views. “Come on, those are fake numbers,” he said.
Mayweather and Pacquiao were both included in Forbes' list of highest-paid athletes in 2011. Mayweather was ranked first, with earnings of $85 million, while Pacquiao came in second with $62 million.
Mayweather also criticized Pacquiao for allegedly using his name to promote his upcoming fight against Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez.
“They’re using my name to promote Marquez and Pacquiao,” he said. “When I’m fighting a guy, all the talk is about me and my opponent. You’ll hear Manny Pacquiao’s name every once in a while, but all the talk is about me and my opponent.”
“See, this kid, like I said before, he has to use Floyd Mayweather’s name to sell fights,” he added.
Mayweather last fought in May 2012, defeating Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision. He was incarcerated in June later after pleading guilty to a 2010 domestic violence charge.
