Filipino woodpushers nearly topped the 2008 Los Angeles Open Chess Championships over the weekend in Los Angeles, California, after top seed Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr.'s first prize finish.
Antonio showed his old deadly form as he a 1-3- 4 finished with 4.0 points following a final-round demolition over American Craig Allen Faber.
Russian IM Melikset Khachiyan, Cebuano IM Enrico Sevillano and US Master Joel "Cholo" Banawa, took the second to fourth placers, respectively also with a similar 4.0 points each in five outings after the tie break points was applied.
In other matches, the California-based Khachiyan settled a truce with Sevillano, protégée of sportsman/ National Master Matias "Bombi" Aznar, and Banawa subdued local bet Joshua Gutman.
The many-time RP Open champion Antonio, top player of the Philippine Army Chess Team, is in a roll in the US Chess circuit when he topped the 8th Universal Annual Swiss Chess Open last September 28 in Auburn Hills, Michigan then proceeded to win the G/19 on the 19th in Scottdale, Georgia last October 19.
