MANILA – Filipino cue artist Roberto Gomez won $3,000 after prevailing at Manny Pacquiao’s Pacmania Open 9-Ball Tournament in the US over the weekend.
Gomez conquered American Mark Haddad, 9-5, at the Hard Times Billiards Center in Bellflower, California.
The Filipino had an unbeaten run in the tournament which offered a total prize purse worth $10,000, a BilliardPhilippines.com article stated.
Haddad, meanwhile, got $1,500 while 3rd placer Oscar Dominguez of Mexico took home $1,000. Gomez beat the Mexican, 7-5, in the semifinal round.
“I’m very happy and proud to have won this tournament made by my boxing idol, sayang nga lang, hindi siya nakarating,” said Gomez, who was supposed to play against the pound-for-pound king in an exhibition match.
Pacquao, who is in the thick of training for his Nov. 14 “Firepower” clash against Miguel Cotto, was unable to make it to the exhibition match. But he sent congratulatory messages to Gomez and other participants.
Proceeds of the Pacmania Open 9-Ball Tournament will reportedly go to the Manny Pacquiao Foundation for the benefit of typhoon victims in the Philippines. – With a report from BilliardPhilippines.com
