Bam Olivares of Daily Tribune edged out other contenders in the Nissan Speed Run media challenge at the Aseana Power Station strip in Parañaque City on Thursday.
Olivares won the top prize using the all-new Nissan Frontier Navara with the six-speed manual transmission.
The Tribune motoring columnist notched 11.6 seconds to top the 0-100 kilometer per hour challenge.
Anjo Perez of Manila Bulletin and Jeff Reyes of The Philippine Star, meanwhile, were tied at 11.7 seconds.
However, Perez knocked out Reyes for second place after the panel led by Nissan executive vice-president Beth Lee measured the braking distances each had for the 100-0 kmh tiebreaker.
Perez had 45.4 meters while Reyes burned rubber for 50.8 before a complete stop.

According to Lee, the Speed Run was designed to test the Navara’s capabilities as a pickup truck that has introduced a lot of firsts in its class.
These include the first with an automatic transmission, a six-speed manual transmission and now, as a sport utility truck.
“This is a Sport Utility Truck that can take on all comers,” Lee said.
She said that while Nissan continuously developed the Navara as a sport utility truck, the carmaker also had fuel-efficiency in mind, thus the introduction of the six-speed manual transmission model.
“Pickup trucks are not normally tested to perform like sports cars, but with the Navara Speed Run, we want to show you that the Navara has the soul of a sports car but without the gas guzzling side effect,” Lee added. Roy Medina, abs-cbnNEWS.com
