San Miguel seeks win No. 5 vs Purefoods
MANILA -- The San Miguel is set to do battle with Purefoods Tender Juicy on Wednesday as it targets win number 5 in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen, coming off an 88-69 whipping of Sta. Lucia Realty last Saturday, will try to maintain solo hold of the No. 3 spot in team standings. San Miguel currently owns a 4-2 win-loss slate.
The Giants, on the other hand, have a 4-3 mark and are aiming to climb the standings to tie with San Miguel.
Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said they will have to deal with complacency especially when playing against “less regarded” teams.
This happened when they played and lost against Coca-Cola, 93-79, last October 28.
“We played with fire and got burned,” said Gregorio in a report posted on PBA.ph. “Sometimes what we are trying to arrest is our tendency to take other teams for granted.”
Both teams are playing without some of their key players, who are resting due to injuries. SMB will play sans Seigle and Ildefonso while Purefoods will try to overcome the absence of Rafi Reavis and PJ Simon.
Game time will be at 7:30 p.m.
The 5:30 p.m. curtain raiser, meanwhile, will feature a match up between Talk ‘N Text and Coca-Cola.
TNT (2-2) has lost 2 straight games after opening the conference with back-to-back wins over Rain or Shine and Sta. Lucia.
Seeking their second straight victory, the Tigers (1-3) are expected to have a tough time matching up with the Tropang Texters.
TNT Coach Chot Reyes, however, is not counting Coca-Cola out, saying forwards Harvey Carrey (knee) and Jarred Dillinger (bruised rib) are doubtful starters because of injuries.
Coca-Cola coach Kenneth Duremdes anticipates a tough match-up against TNT but is keeping his fingers crossed that his players will be able to contain the Tropang Texters’ aggressive guards Jimmy Alapag, Jason Castro and Macmac Cardona.
