Other Pinoy boxers living in Pacquiao's shadow
MANILA -- As the spot light is cast on the preparations of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao against Miguel Cotto, other Pinoy boxers are quietly working in the background as they fight their way up the boxing ladder.
One of them is Z “The Dream” Gorres.
For the past one-and-a-half months, Gorres has been training at the Wild Card Boxing club with Pacquiao as he prepares against a very game fighter in Luis Melendez of Columbia.
Gorres will co-headline an event at the House of Blues in Mandalay Bay on Friday (Saturday in Manila).
Gorres said he needs to win this match to have a shot at a world championship.
“Importante, importante talaga ito. This is a stepping stone siguro for my next fight. It will be a title fight,” he said.
Along with trainer Edito Villamor, Hall-of-Fame coach Freddie Roach will also be in his corner.
Gorres said he feels good about his chances.
“I feel strong talaga and I know I’m going to win this match,” he said.
The other co-headliner for Friday’s fight will be Pinoy Mark Jason Melligen. He will go up against Mexico’s Michel Rosales.
In the undercard of the Pacquiao Fight, Richie Mepranum of Sarangani will slug it out against Ernie Marquez of the US.
