Golden Boy willing to make Donaire-Arce fight
MANILA, Philippines – Golden Boy Promotions is willing to negotiate with rival Top Rank Promotions in order to put together a fight between the world’s two top super bantamweights, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and Abner Mares.
This, according to GBP chief executive Richard Schaefer.
Schaefer spoke about the fight following Mares’ unanimous decision victory over Anselmo Moreno last weekend. Mares, a Golden Boy fighter, called out Donaire, who is promoted by Top Rank, after his victory.
“With us, you have a willing promoter and I am happy to put up a multi-million dollar offer for Nonito Donaire to show up,” Schaefer said, as quoted by Boxing Scene.
But Schaefer said his Top Rank counterparts may not be so eager to set up the fight.
“I’m not so sure that after this performance tonight by Abner Mares that (Donaire’s) promoter is going to be all that excited of making this fight,” he said.
Golden Boy and Top Rank have been embroiled in a ‘cold war,’ with neither company willing to pit their fighters against each other.
Schafer said that Donaire’s promoters may feel that the fight “has to marinate a little bit longer.”
“There are plenty of different options to get it done, but the fact is we want to get it done and we don’t believe in marinating stuff. I think it should be the next fight for Abner and Nonito Donaire,” he said.
Schaefer said he is open to having a dialogue with Top Rank in order to discuss the fight.
“I don’t believe in negotiation through the press,” he said. “But if that’s the way it has to go, we are prepared to do that as well.”
“There are different ways. We can sit down and try to get it done or there are other ways where one puts an envelope on the table and the other puts one on the table and see who offers the most,” he added.
What Schaefer is sure of is that there is a real demand for the fight.
“I think the world wants to see that fight. It’s one of the biggest fights in respective of weight classes which can be made, and I think it should be made... There are plenty of options to get it done,” he said.
Donaire has said that he wants to fight Mares, though he will first have to go through Mexican brawler Jorge Arce, whom he will face on December 15.
