MANILA, Philippines – Mexican fighter Abner Mares, a potential opponent of Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, entered The RING Magazine’s pound-for-pound list following his unanimous decision victory over Anselmo Moreno last Saturday.

Mares, who holds a record of 25 wins with one draw, successfully defended his World Boxing Council super bantamweight belt against Moreno.

Moreno usually campaigns at bantamweight and climbed a division to fight the Mexican. The loss snapped a 27-fight winning streak for the Panamanian boxer, giving him only the second loss of his career.

“Mares moved from No. 4 to No. 3 in the junior featherweight (super bantamweight) rankings, replacing Toshiaki Nishioka, who recently announced his retirement,” said The RING in their latest ratings update. [http://ringtv.craveonline.com/blog/175855-ring-ratigns-update-mares-advances]

“Moreno... remains The RING’s No. 1-rated bantamweight,” it added. “However, his No. 10 place in the magazine’s pound-for-pound rankings was overtaken by Mares.”

It is the first time that Mares has entered the RING Magazine’s pound-for-pound ratings.

Donaire, whom Mares challenged immediately after his win, is ranked No. 5 by The RING Magazine pound-for-pound. He is also The RING’s super bantamweight champion.

Mares also moved up to No. 2 in ESPN’s junior featherweight/super bantamweight ratings.

ESPN analyst Dan Rafael said Mares’ win against Moreno was “perhaps the best performance on his career.”

“The boxing world wants to see Mares face fellow titleholder Nonito Donaire, but the petty Golden Boy-Top Rank feud stands in the way,” Rafael added.

Mares is ranked No. 12 in ESPN’s pound-for-pound ratings, while Donaire is at No. 7.
