Mares fight needs to happen, says Donaire
MANILA, Philippines – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is hopeful that he will one day get to fight fellow super bantamweight champion Abner Mares of Mexico despite being part of different promotional companies.
Donaire is promoted by Top Rank, the rival company of Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Mares. The two promotional companies are embroiled in a bitter war, and neither group seems willing to pit their fighter against each other.
This is bad news for both Mares and Donaire, who have both publicly expressed their willingness to fight each other in order to determine who is the best fighter at their weight class.
“Mares, I think Mares is on top after (Japanese boxer Toshiaki) Nishioka, and I think that’s a fight that we need to make it happen, somehow,” Donaire said in an interview with The Overtime Page on YouTube.
Mares is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Panama’s Anselmo Moreno last weekend, and he wasted no time challenging Donaire after his victory.
Mares’ promoter, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy, has claimed that he is willing to put up the money to put the fight together, but hinted that Top Rank may not be so open to the fight.
In a separate interview with The Overtime Page, Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said he is willing to work with Golden Boy to make the fight happen.
“If [Golden Boy president] Oscar [De La Hoya] wants to do that fight... all he has to do is say how much he wants from us, and we’ll be happy to put it on,” Arum claimed.
“If Mares wants to fight Donaire and Oscar says I want ‘x’ dollars from Golden Boy and Mares to do the fight, then why not?” he added.
De La Hoya has said he is willing to go all the way to Arum’s house in an effort to put the fight together, something that seemed to amuse Donaire.
“Let’s do it. That would be good. If he’s a true fighter, not just a promote, he would make that fight happen,” Donaire said.
