RP draws Greece in 4th round of Chess Olympiad
The RP Chess Team drew with highly rated Greece, 2-2, in the fourth round of the 38th World Chess Olympiad at the International Congress Center in Dresden, Germany.
According to SportsNews.ph’s report, international master (IM) John Paul Gomez scored a win while grandmasters (GM) Wesley So and Darwin Laylo split points with their respective foes in the fourth round.
Gomez marked his second straight win by outplaying GM Stellos Halkias (ELO 2584) in 55 moves of an English.
“Nakuha sa tiyaga. Maganda yung laro ko sa middle game,” said Gomez. He now has two wins and two draws in the 11-round tournament.
So, who took over the top board in place of GM Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor, drew with GM Ioannis Papaoannou in only 20 moves of the Slav.
Laylo also settled for a draw with GM Dimitrios Mastrovasilis after 55 moves of another Slav.
GM Jayson Gonzales absorbed the lone loss for the day when he yielded to GM Vasilios Kotroninias.
The result left the Filipinos with five points on two wins, one draw and one loss under the match point style scoring system being adopted by FIDE for the first time since 1927.
Next up for the Filipinos is the GM Ehsan Ghaemmaghami-led Iran, 4-0 winner over Nicaragua.
The Filipinas did not fare any better, losing .5-3.5 to No. 26 seed Belarus.
The RP team earlier won over Monaco in the third round of the tournament.
Gomez trounced Roman Krulich in 30 moves of the Sicilian Alapin while Laylo humbled Jean-Philippe Gentilleau in 49 moves of the Queen's Gambit Declined in the Philppines' 2.5-1.5 win over No. 96 Monaco.
