De la Hoya to reach out to Arum for Donaire-Mares

MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Oscar de la Hoya said he is willing to reach out to his rival, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, just to make the Nonito Donaire Jr.-Abner Mares title clash happen.

Boxing pundits wanted to see a super bantamweight showdown between Donaire and Mares but the wedge between De la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) and Top Rank is keeping the fight from happening.

"Obviously, we're not going to beg for it, 'Bob, please, work with us,'" De la Hoya admitted in a RingTV report

"It's tiring. It's the same song and dance. The bottom line is that he doesn't want to work with us."

However, De la Hoya said he will exert effort to contact Arum and discuss the possibility of arranging the fight.

“We just want to make the fights happen. That's it. We're open to trying anything to make the fights happen," said De la Hoya.

Donaire and Mares are two of the best 122-pound fighters today.

The Filipino boxer is the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight king, while Mares, who remains unbeaten in 25 fights, owns the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) version of the crown.

"They both deserve it. They want to be great. They have to fight the best. They have to fight each other,” said De la Hoya.

Arum, who has been at odds with De la Hoya since GBP tried to sign Pacquiao, has already ruled out a possible co-promotion.

But Arum said he is willing to pay GBP for Mares’ services just for the Donaire fight.

“We have no interest in working with Golden Boy. However we will offer them a sum of money for the services of Mares, put them up as a co-promoter but we have no interest doing a regular co-promotion with them,” the veteran promoter told Boxing Scene.
